PREFACE
The textbook covers the different domains of lexicology: word formation, semasiology, phraseology, etymology, structure of English vocabulary, variants and dialects of English, lexicography. It is aimed at providing students with new materials based on the problems of lexicology. This course is a part of the curricula of Foreign Languages department of Universities.
In selecting the reading text and video materials from YouTube the author was guided by the need to expose students to the new research, dissertation works, articles, theoretical and practical works done in the branch of lexicology. The requirements of the contemporary methodological technologies are also taken into consideration. Each lesson is given in consequent stages, which help teachers present the new theme, make student practice and produce what they learnt. Different tasks and activities are suggested in order to motivate students and develop their critical and creative thinking. The tasks of the book complete the courses of writing, listening, speaking and reading. It helps students in:
comprehension of the English language;
language acquisition, especially with enriching the vocabulary;
developing of communication skills which in their turn lead to a higher level of competence in English;
mastering their academic writing skills;
improving listening skills;
analyzing the theory through practice.
The different methods as the case study, project based teaching, problem based teaching have been also included in the textbook. The range of exercises is intended to develop students’ creative and critical thinking.
Students are encouraged to identify the linguistic phenomena related to the word meaning and semantic relations between words, to study the language system, to recognize the native words and the words of foreign origin.
The exercises will broaden students’ knowledge in the following areas:
- lexical meaning of words and types of word meaning changes;
- synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, neologisms, archaisms;
- word formation processes;
- the phraseological expression, their meaning and origin;
- etymology of English words;
- lexical variants in United Kingdom;
- the meaning of Americanisms, Canadianisms and Australianisms and their equivalents in British English.
The textbook gives the theoretical material in lexicology, develops reading, listening, writing and speaking skills in English, prepares students for further scientific activities.
