ETYMOLOGY OF PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS

Aim: identifying the source of phraseological units; analyzing the spheres of using phraseological units.

  1. Brainstorming. Ask students:

1.How phraseological units can appear in the language?
2.Why do we use them?
3.In which spheres of life phraseological units can be used?

2. Tell the students to find out phraseological units from any sphere of life. They can suggest the phraseological units in the target and native languages. Ask them to tell the origin or the source of appearance of the suggested phraseological units.
3. Retell the students the story of lady Godiva, how this story is connected with the phraseological unit Peeping Tom. The teacher can also tell the students some other legends or stories related to the origin of phraseological units, f.e. the tradition of the owners of pubs in old England to draw all the visitors of pub by crooks, pulling them at the legs or clothes. From this tradition there is a phraseological unit – by hooks or by crooks, which means by all means.
4. Give the students the list of phraseological units according to the spheres of life. Simultaneously they should match the phraseological units with their definitions.
sea life:
t ell that to the marines to be in difficult position
in deep waters to be without money
in low waters to be close to the target
to be at sea to be in bewilderment
to see the land nonsense, don’t tell lies
to run into difficult waters to be in trouble
fish and fishing:
to fish in troubled water to drink alcohol very much
to drink like a fish to be drowned
to feed the fish to make a profit on the bend
sport:
to have the ball at one’s feet to have an advantage
to back the wrong horse you say the last word
the ball is with you to do the wrong choice
