IV.PHRASEOLOGY
CLASSIFICATION OF PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS
Aim: introducing phraseological units; analyzing phraseological units, classifying phraseological units.

  1. Suggest the students the two word combinations: red tape and red tapes. Ask them to compare and define their meanings. Ask the students to tell more examples to phraseological units. Ask the students to give the definition to phraseological units and mark the best definitions.

    Phraseological units are defined as non-motivated word groups that cannot be freely made up in speech but are reproduced as ready-made units; the essential feature of phraseological units is stability of lexical components and grammatical structure. The member words of phraseological units are reproduced as single unchangeable collocations.

  1. Ask the students whether phraseological units can have positive or negative meaning. Distribute the students the cards with the list of phraseological units and ask them to find out the phraseological units with negative and positive meanings and place them in the table. Add some more besides the given examples.

  1. Group work. Divide the class into the 4 groups. Each of the groups should find out the phraseological units with negative or positive meaning and suggest them to the other groups. The students in other groups will find out the meaning of phraseological units.

  2. Ask the students if phraseological units are classified and if they are classified, according to which criteria? Write their suggestions on the blackboard.

  3. Present the classification by professor V.Vinogradov, define them:
