record was $886 million at an auction of 52-week bills in September 1983.
The average return of 8.45% was down slightly from 8.49% at the previous 52- week bill auction.
In the bond market, trading was quiet early in the day but prices began to ad­vance in the afternoon. The Treasury's 30- year bonds climbed to 100 5/32 from 9914/ $2, while the yield fell to 8.98% from 9.05%.
The latest 10-year notes rose to 98 6/32 from 97 22/32, and the yield fell to 9.15%.

Only one new issue came to market yes­terday and that was a $100 millinn offering of 10-year notes for McDonald's Corp. Un­derwriters said the issue sold out quickly.
