Program Overview

The Lolo National Forest will be filling a GS-0460-11 Supervisory Forester position under the Merit authority. This is a full-time, permanent position on the Forest, with a duty station of Missoula, MT. This position covers the East Zone (Seeley Lake, Missoula and Ninemile Ranger Districts) of the Lolo National Forest. The incumbent will supervise a staff of 3-7 permanent employees and coordinate all aspects of coordination with the zone NEPA planning team, pre-sale work and timber sale administration & COR on 2400-6, IRTC and IRSC projects on the three district Lolo East Zone. The position is supervised by the Missoula District Ranger and serves as a primary staff assistant for all three of the zone’s District Rangers. The position is ideal for those individuals with future ambitions to advance their career in either timber management or line positions.


Major Duties

Independently completes or supervises the following:

  • Sale Administration on timber and stewardship contracts

  • Contracting Officer’s Representative on Integrated Resource Service Contracts.

  • Serves as a member on Interdisciplinary Teams for NEPA projects.

  • Prepares Sale feasibility reports and economic analyses for projects.

  • Determines sale area boundaries, layout and harvest systems.

  • Determines and manages resources to complete sale layout.

  • Prepares timber sale contracts and maps.

  • Reviews Contracts for compliance with NEPA.

  • Communicates regularly with the public, collaborators and contractors.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Desirable skills include:

  • Project management skills

  • Experience with layout, cruising and harvest systems

  • Contracting Officers Representative Level III

  • Experience in NEPA as a IDT member or leader

  • Experience in the preparation of 2400-6, IRTC and IRSC contracts

  • Supervision and mentoring experience

  • Strong communication skills

  • Certified Timber Sale Administrator



Physical Requirements

The work varies from office work usually at a computer to field work requiring strenuous physical exertion for extended periods including walking on uneven, steep terrain in winter spring and summer conditions.


Qualification Requirements

Those who are interested must be U.S. citizens and meet the qualification requirements for the GS-0460-11. Qualifying experience for the GS-11 level includes one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-9.

Community Information

LOLO NATIONAL FOREST: The two-million-acre Lolo National Forest (NF) in west central Montana is one of ten national forests in Montana. Created in 1906, the Lolo NF now includes former national forests originally named the "Cabinet," "Hell Gate,""Missoula," and "Selway" National Forests.

Located west of the continental divide, the Lolo NF is influenced by both continental and maritime climates. These climates provide for a wide range of environmental gradients producing a forest of high diversity. Diverse ecosystems range from wet, western red cedar bottoms to high alpine peaks, and forests of alpine larch and white bark pine.

These diverse ecosystems are home for 17 conifer and 5 hardwood tree species, over 300 bird species, at least 20 fish species, over 60 mammal species and an estimated 1,500 plant species, including 250 non-native plant species. Within the Lolo NF, are record-sized trees, the Montana Champion ponderosa pine located in the Fish Creek drainage and a national co-champion western larch near Seeley Lake.

Elevation ranges from less than 2,400 ft. on the Clark Fork River below Thompson Falls to many peaks over 7,000 ft. and topping out at over 9,000 ft. at Lolo Peak near the town of Lolo and Ptarmigan Point near Seeley Lake. The highest point is Scapegoat Mountain within the Scapegoat Wilderness.

Water is plentiful within the Lolo NF producing over 100 named lakes and nearly 1,000 named streams including five major rivers.
MISSOULA, MT: Missoula, Montana has a population of 64,000 serving a trade area of over 300,000. Consequently, the city has more amenities and services than most cities of its size. Missoula is home to the University of Montana, College of Technology, three public and two private high schools, and several public and private elementary schools. Missoula's economic base is tourism, Federal Government, motor carriers, and the University of Montana. Neighborhoods and residential settings are diverse ranging from urban to very rural. Missoula has two large hospitals, which provide a full array of inpatient and outpatient services. Missoula has many other health care practitioners to offer also. Missoula residents enjoy all four seasons of the year. The elevation of Missoula is 3,205, with an average annual temperature of 44.6 F., with a January daily minimum of 15.4 F. and July daily maximum of 83.4 F. The growing season is 137 days with an average mean rainfall of 13.5 inches, and an average mean snowfall of 42.5 inches. Recreation facilities and opportunities are abundant, including public golf courses, parks, tennis courts, swimming pools, health clubs, softball diamonds, ice rinks, and hiking trails. Many rivers provide for rafting, fishing and swimming opportunities. There is one downhill ski area is less than an hour from town, and three within two hours. Numerous cross country ski trails and snowmobile trails exist.

Montana has personal income tax and property tax, but no sales tax. Home prices vary widely; homes prices begin at approximately $175,000, and an average 3 bedroom 2 bath home will cost from $250,000 to $350,000. Average rent is approximately $750/month and up.
