Guide for International Exchange Students


  1. Visa Information

All related application are processed at the National Immigration Agency at various cities and counties according to your permanent address. For those residing on campus and in Kaohsiung City, please go to the Service Station of National Immigration Agency in Kaohsiung to submit your application. (Please note: Students need to apply for Visa Visa at their own counry before entering Taiwan. )
A. Type of Visa required: Visitor Visa/ Resident Visa:
Visitors Visa (single/multiple entry)— (For 1 semester Exchange Students)

SINGLE-entry visa holders need to apply for a RE-ENTRY permit prior to temporarily leaving Taiwan. (Please note: if the students plan to leave the country within the study period, please apply for multiple entry visa.)

▓ Visa is valid for maximum of 60 days. There will be 2 extensions allowed, with accumulated duration not exceeding 6 months or 180 days.

▓ Visa must be extended 10 days prior to expiration.


Required Documents for Extension:

1.“Multiple-purpose Application Form for Foreign Residents” application

2. The origianl and one copy of passport (original will be returned after verification).

3. Proof of registration from NSYSU (with name, student ID, and duration).


Period of Approval: Extension is given upon application.
Resident Visa—( For students staying over 6 months)

▓ Student arrive into Taiwan with Visitor Visa need to apply for Resident Visa in order to apply for Alien Resident Certificate (ARC)

▓ Students who are issued with Resident Visa need to apply for ARC within 15 days upon arrival in Taiwan to avoid violation of immigration regulations. Fines will be charged for non compliances that may result in immediate deportation.
B. Alien Resident Certificate (ARC)

Foreigner who plans to stay in Taiwan for more than 6 months is required to apply for an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC).


Required Documents:

1.“Multiple-purpose Application Form for Foreign Residents” application

2. Two copies of 1 inch. Photo.

3. The origianl and one copy of passport (original will be returne after verification).

4. Proof of registration from NSYSU (with name, student ID, and duration).

5. Application fee: NT$1,000 for 1 year, NT$2,000 for 2 years, NT$3,000 for 3


years, Overseas Chinese Students: NT$500.
Period of Approval: 5 working days (Pick up ARC with proof of receipt).
Note:

  1. If your courses end in Dec, you may extend your visa until Jan 10.

  2. If your courses end in Jan, you may extend your visa until Feb 10.

  3. If your courses end in Jun, you may extend your visa until Jul 10.


C. Taiwan Identification

▓ Taiwan Identification (ID) is required to open bank accounts in Taiwan.

Required Documents:

1.“ID No. Application Form”

2. The origianl and one copy of passport (original will be returned after verification).
Period of Approval: ID is given upon application.

Fee: None.



2. Living Cost

The typical estimated budget for a student per semester is approximately NT$50,000; this includes room and board, transportation, academic and personal expenses.


3. Accommodation

Foreign students are eligible to apply for the student dormitory, and the deadline for application is May 31 (fall semester) or November 30 (spring semester). By principles, all the international exchange students will be accommodated in our recently renovated dormitory, International Villa. A shared room of 2 students is provided and it is furnished with the following components: a bed, bookshelf, desk, lamp, closet, chair, air conditioner. Students will have to take care of your own bedding and mattress. Details regarding fees are as followed:

NT$13,000 per semester

NT$4,000 for winter vacation; NT$7,285 for summer vacation

Electricity fee is included in the above dormitory fee. However, please note that extra charge will take place if your usage is above the limit of 100 units derived from the measuring meters.

Note: For students who decide not to live in the International Villa, you will be accommodated in a shared room of four students (which is a different building separated from the International Villa) with the cost of approximately NT$7000 for each occupancy per semester. Additional fees will also be charged for winter and summer vacations. Please make a NOTE on the application for on-campus accommodation if you choose this option.


4. Food Services

Cafeterias in the student dorms offer Chinese food. Students can buy lunch boxes in the grocery store at a reasonable price. Students will find both Chinese and Western-style restaurants in the Student Activities Center.


5. Transportation

Motorcycles are the most common commuting tools. Motorists, according to the traffic rules, need to pay a fine of NT$500 if they do not wear a helmet. Most of the international driver’s licenses are recognized in Taiwan; however, please be aware that bring the international license with you is a must when riding your motorcycle. Bus is also a convenient commuting tool. The ticket fee for the bus is NT$12.



How to get to the University



BY AIRFrom Chiang Kai Shek International Airport in Taoyuan (CKS International Airport), if the airline you take do not have direct transit flight to Kaohsiung, you must go to Taipei Sung Shan Airport and then fly to Kaohsiung Airport. Once you have arrived KH Airport, you may take either the bus or taxi to campus.
BY TRAIN: You can take the train from any train station and just make a stop at KH train station, then take either bus or taxi to campus.
BY BUS: Bus 248 will be able to reach the tunnel entrance of university. Bus No.248 runs to and from the University and the Railway Station. The Airport Shuttle runs to and from the Railway Station and the Kaohsiung Airport every 15 minutes. Students can take the Airport Shuttle from the Kaohsiung Airport to the Railway Station and transfer to Bus No.248 to the University.
BY TAXIThe cost to take a taxi from the Kaohsiung Airport to the university is around NT400. The cost to take a taxi from the KH train station to the university is around NT 200.
6. Insurance

New students are required to provide a copy of the proof of medical insurance for the first five months after arriving Taiwan. According to the National Health Insurance Law, all foreigners residing in Taiwan for more than four months, and holding an Alien Resident Certificate, are required to join the National Health Insurance Program. The premium is NT$659 per month. The premium is subject to change.




  1. Work-study

Work-study could be authorized only after a foreign student has studied in Taiwan for more than two semesters.
8. Sport Facilities and Recreation

The University provides out-door sport facilities, including a track and field stadium, a swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, a softball field and a skating rink. The gymnasium contains a table-tennis room, a dancing room, badminton courts, basketball courts and a weight training room. Facilities are opened to every student with a valid student ID. Students have to sign- in at the Sports Equipment Room on the first floor before using the facilities. Students using the swimming pool and the tennis court have to first get a ticket and show valid student ID.



9. The Student Union


The Student Union provides all students with clubs and activities. There are currently 64 student organizations, including sports. Some of them are related to culture, such as karate, tai chi (chuan), Chinese medicine, Chinese Chirography, Chinese traditional music, aboriginal culture, etc.
10. Computer Center and Facilities

The Computer Center, containing 3 PC rooms and one workstation room for a total of more than 200 consoles /terminals equipped with up-to-date software/ network connection, is open to students.




  1. Library

The University Library currently holds 693,744 volumes (including 245,800 volumes of foreign books) and 6,362 titles of serials subscription. Students may borrow books with valid student IDs for a period of 30 days. NT$5 fine per day will be charged for each overdue book.
