Munoo becomes a survant

“Where is the cream, you little monkey?” the young Babu in a merry voice. “Go and bring us some butter and the cream.”

“Here are the cream and the butter,” called Bibiji from the kitchen. “Let them eat and fatten while I slave.” Munoo brought the cream to the living–room. Then he stood at the door again. He liked the young Babu who was so merry and spoke so kindly to him. “Where are you now, you lazy boy?” shouted Bibiji when she heard that Sheila was asking her uncle if she could give Munoo some tea. “Is there no work to do here?” Munoo went back to the kitchen, Sheila’s kind words had touched him to the heart. “Sheila and Babu are kind” he said to himself. “They wanted to give me tea.But Bibiji is terrible woman and she seems to hate me”

A little later, when his mistress was in the yard Munoo entered Prem’s room again. The young man was shaving. Of all the most wonderful things that Munoo had seen since he came to town yesterday, the little machine with the teeth which the young Babu held in his hand was the most wonderful.

“What are you looking at, you monkey?” said the babu merrily and he laughed seeing the surprise in the boy’s eyes. Munoo smiled in admiration.

“Babuji, “ he said after a while, “does this machine cost a lot of money?”

“ Do you want to shave your hear of your head?” asked Prem laughing. “Bring me a towel from the other room and I shall give you a blade,” he added.

Munoo ran to the other room to bring the towel, and his heart was full of admiration and love for the young Babu.

“Oh, you bad boy, where have you been?Is there no work to do that you run from one room to another. Haven’t I told you that your place is in the kitchen? Can’t you understand it, must I break your bones before you understand?”

“What must I do now?” asked running back to the kitchen. “What must you do!” she shouted again. “Isn’t there anything to do? Have you no eyes or what? Look at those dishes and tea-thing which must be washed up” Munoo began to wash up the tea things. He found that as soon as he poured water on the white chalk the things became clean. “That’s easy,”he said. And he quickly poured water on some cups and put them for dry.

“Oh, what are you doing! Clean those cups just as we clean the metal pots, and clean them well,so that no dirt remains.”

With a heavy heart munoo set to work again. At home his aunt had done the housework herself and when he helped her she was very kind to him. He remembered that sometimes his aunt had even kissed him. Now he understood his position in this world. He was a slave here, a servant whom everyone could abuse even beat, though not so far it had not come to that. He felt sad, friendless. And yet, he hoped that Bibiji would stop hating him one day. The young Babu was good and the children liked his monkey dance.
