Along came a distraction
Sometimes an expression may creep between a subject and its verb. Don’t let
this lead you astray.
The nurserymaid , along with the cook and the housekeeper, has caught
chickenpox from the children.
Poisoning , as well as the shock of the bite, was the cause of death.
My husband , besides our neighbour and his dog, is walking the coastal path.
We’ll have a closer look at those parenthetical commas in the next chapter, but
for the moment just note that they are precisely that – a parenthesis or bracket –
and everything between them could be lifted out of the sentence without altering
the grammatical relationship between the subject and the verb.
