Comparing like with like
Most comparatives say that something is more or less something than the  other
something,  if  you  see  what  we  mean.  But  it  is  also  a  comparative  to  say  that
something is the same (or not the same) as something else :
He is as cunning as a fox.
This ring is not as expensive as that one. (I want that one.)
That’s superlative
‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…’

Superlatives  are  beyond  compare.  Nothing  can  be  better  or  worse.  They  are
simply the bEST .
The giraffe is the tall est living animal.
Concorde was the fast est plane.
Churchill was the great est prime minister.
Most superlatives end in -est , although not most. Nor indeed worst. And, as with
comparatives, neither do longer words. Where a comparative has more or less, a
superlative has most or least :
Lord of the Rings is the most overrated book of the twentieth century.
All’s Well That Ends Well is perhaps the least performed of Shakespeare’s plays.
Superlatives refer to more than two things: you can’t be the best of two players,
the best you can manage is to be the better.
