LINDSAY, Amelia Ann Brown 15 Nov 1813 5 Sep 1899

(w/o John J. P. Lindsay)

(d/o Rev. Joseph and Sallie Thomas Brown)

Obituary: The Pulaski Citizen 7 Sep 1899

At an advanced age, after weeks of serious illness, Mrs. Ann Lindsay finally yielded up the ghost, Monday evening, Sept. 4, and sweetly slept the sleep that knows no waking. A daughter of Rev. Joseph Brown, whose stirring biography has recently been published in the Citizen, Mrs. Lindsay’s early life was identified with the early history of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberland Presbyterian church. She was a noble woman, with lofty ideals, and like Goldsmith’s preacher, she not only pointed out the path to a higher life and duty, but led the way by a generous and pious example. Few women have enjoyed the love and respect of those who knew them to the same extent, and after her years of active usefulness were passed, she set an example in consecration and resignation to the Master’s will, which has been a hallowed benediction to the whole church and community where she lived and worshipped. She was taken sicek July 6, and about four weeks ago became much worse. During a month her death was almost daily expected, but with remarkable vitality she clung to life, though she often expressed a willingness and even a desire to go. She spoke of death with no more concern than she would have manifest in attending a sacramental service at Moriah, and seemed to regard dissolution as a simple transition to a desirable state of being where she would be free from the cares and sorrows of life and enjoy without interruption the blessings of the Master she had served so long and faithfully. The funeral was conducted at Mt. Moriah by Rev. G. W. Mitchell who had been for manyyears an intimate friend of the family. The communityjoins in sympathy for the bereaved family, and especially for the noble son, who gave up everything else which life offers in order that he might be a comfort ad a consolation to his mother in her declining years.

The Pulaski Citizen 06 Jan 1898

Tom Frank Lindsay died at the home of his mother Sunday morning, January 2, at 8 o’clock and was buried at Moriah Graveyard Monday at 1 o’clock. He was a member of one of the most prominent families in the county, an excellent soldier during the war and a good citizen since. He had been a suffering since the war.

The Pulaski Citizen 13 Jan 1898

Tom Frank Lindsay departed this life Sunday the 2nd day of January, 1898, at the home of his mother on Egnew Creek. I feel that I would be recreant to my own feelings as well as to a duty that I owe to the memory of a life long friend, if I did not pay a tribute of respect to his dust, and a token of regard to his aged mother and his only surviving brother and sister. They have been my fast friends for thirty years or more, during all that time I have been intimately acquainted with Tom Frank. A truer, a warmer, a kinder hearted man I never knew. He may have had his faults, but who has not? "Let the guiltless throw the first stone." He was an honest man, "The noblest work of God." If he was your friend danger never deterred him time, place or distances never made him forget you. He was an affectionate and loving father and a dutiful son. During his long and protracted sickness his mother's anxietyand watchfulness wearied him very much, he was always wanting her to go to bed and rest. He enlisted as a soldier in the 3rd Tennessee and was in the war until the fall of Donelson. In that light he had his left arm shattered with a minnie ball but he made his escape from that place and was not captured, but returned to his home where he remained until the occupation of Pulaski by the Federals; he then went south and remained until the war ended. I have always had it from the boys who were with him in the army that he was a soldier, and all of them were in the army with him, who are now living, liked him and mayof them visited him during his last illness, and they always said, "Iam sorry to see him go. He was a good man." Well, I hope he has found a happier home than earth afforded for is was indeed a stormy life. That broken arm and the hardships of the war so shattered his constitution that he was an invalid all his life. He was a confiding trusting man. In his younger days he thought everybody honest, and as a result he was not as successful in business as he might otherwise have been. He had several reverses in early life which crippled him financiallyand perhaps energetically, verymuch, then he lost two bright and promisinglittle boys in one night. Soon after his wife died and left him a broken down and broken hearted man with two daughters and a son to look after and educate. But providence as kind enough to him to let him live to see them all three about grown and pretty well educated and with prospects of a longer and happier life than his had been. I know when he professed religion and joined the C. P. Church, but do not remember the year. As far as I know or ever heard he lived a consistent Christian life and Iam told that he expressed no fear of the hereafter but died in faith. Much might be said of his family and his antecedents, that he was the grandson of old Col. Brown, the illustrious Indian fighter and one of the earliest pioneers of the West, as well as one of the founders of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, of which he was one of the oldest preachers. But these facts are as well known to the public as to myself. I can only say for myself that Tom Frank Lindsay was a man who had many traits of character that I admired. He was social, liberal, kind, reliable, truthful, charitable and friendly, and if this law of compensation does run through all nature it seems to me that he ought to be a happier man now than he ever was here.
