During the course of the chemistry lab this year, you will be introduced (or re-introduced) to the idea of using significant figures in your calculations. Significant figures have caused some trouble for students in the past and many marks have been lost as a result of the confusion about how to deal with them. Hopefully this little primer will help you understand where they come from, what they mean, and how to deal with them during lab write-ups. When laid out clearly and applied consistently, they are relatively easy to use. In any event, if you have difficulties I (or for that matter any member of the chemistry teaching staff at Kwantlen) will be only too happy to help sort them out with you.
