Topic 1 Basic operations on numbers

Terms:

1. 
   ordinary (proper, improper, decimal, periodic decimal) fraction – oddiy (to’g’ri, noto’g’ri, o’nli, o’nli davriy) kasr / обыкновенная (правильная, неправильная, десятичная, периодическая десятичная) дробь;
   
2. 
   prime (composite) number – tub (murakkab) son/простое (составное) число;
   
3. 
   factor – ko’paytuvchi/множитель;
   
4. 
   highest (greatest) common divisor (HCD) – eng katta umumiy bo’luvchi (EKUB)/наибольший общий делитель (НОД);
   
5. 
   lowest (least) common multiple (LCM) – eng kichik umumiy ko’paytuvchi (EKUK)/наименьший общий кратный (НОК);
   
6. 
   remainder – qoldiq/остаток;
   
7. 
   to simplify – soddalashtirmoq/упрощать;
   
8. 
   multiple (divisor) – karrali (bo’luvchi) / кратное (делитель).
   

Learning objectives:

• 
  to have an understanding about the natural, whole, rational (decimal, periodic decimal, fraction) and irrational numbers;
  
• 
  to be able to perform arithmetic operations on numbers such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, raising to power and extracting a square root;
  
• 
  to follow the order of operations in calculating numerical expressions.
  

Natural numbers – the numbers used for counting. For example: 1, 2, 3, 4, …

Whole numbers – the natural numbers and zero. For example: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, …

Integer numbers – the whole numbers and the numbers opposite to them. E.g.: …, – 2, – 1, 0, 1, 2, …

Rational numbers – numbers that can be represented as , where b is a non-zero integer.

E.g.: 5, 0, – 45, 2.4343… and – the rational numbers.

Decimal numbers – numbers that contain parts. E.g.: – a decimal number; – a periodic decimal number.
