3.4.1 What are Square Roots?
Before you learn what to do with square roots, those of you who have not seen them before mightwant to find out what they are. Put mathematically, if our number is “b”, and its square root is “a”, then we can write that a ×a = b.
Hmmm... Let's do an example or two. The square root of 9 is 3, because 3 ×3 = 9. As another example, the square root of 4 is 2, because 2 ×2 = 4. Square roots are (unfortunately) not all whole numbers, too. For example, the square root of 2 is 1.41421... because 1.41421... multiplied by itself is 2.
