The aim of the research: the analysis of word stress and its types.
In order to achieve the above mentioned aim we should carry out the following tasks:
1) to identify and justify the actuality of the chosen theme;
2) to make a qualitative and quantitative analysis of suprasegmental units and word stress in Modern English.
3) to define the main tendencies of accentual patterns in English
4) to establish the frequency of nuclear accentual patterns in English words
The object of the research: the correlations between the syllabic and accentual structures of English words, the changes that take place with words under the influence of word stress. Materials for the research are the concrete examples which are used in speech.
The theoretical value of the research lies in the fact that related languages have been further elaborated, and on the basis of the specific features of English phonetics and accentual tendencies of the English stress.
The practical value of the research is traced in that the results of the research can be used in lectures on theoretical phonetics of contemporary English, socio-linguistics, intercultural communication, in the theory and practice of phonetics, as well as when lecturing on phonetics of teaching, English word stress and providing sources for seminars in the practice of teaching English phonetics.
The structure of the work: the work consists of an introduction, main part with two chapters, conclusion and list of the used literature.
In the first chapter, which consists of the two parts, we have given the Specific features of English phonetics and a lot of beneficial information about word stress.
In the second chapter, which consists of the two parts, we have concentrated on accentual tendencies of English stress and we have made a qualitative and quantitative analysis and on the basis of the results we have identified primary stress and secondary stress. Moreover, we have learnt about functions of English word stress in this chapter.
