(1996) examined the problem of regional imbalance and
analysed the inter-state variations in India. They concluded that the concept of regional
imbalance is not a new dimension it is an old issue originated since the colonial rule.
The recent policy reforms initiated in 1991 instead of solving the problem has
aggravated the regional imbalance. In the absence of a corrective action and creation of
ideal conditions, such new economic policies would tend to help only those rich states
having better infrastructural facilities and the poor ones have the risk of becoming
relatively poorer.
