GEISERICH, AUTOKRATOR
OF VANDALS
HOW THE
BARBARIAN KING
COULD RECIEVE THE IMPERIAL TITLE
The main object of this article is the problem of changes in politi-
cal terminology as of reaction on the global transformations in the
structure of the Late Roman and Byzantine Empire, so as in the struc-
ture of barbarian
part of the world in the V
th
– VI
th
centuries CE. This
problem is solved on the base of such sources, as the texts by Pro-
copius of Caesarea. In the spotlight is the question of possible connec-
tion between use of the imperial title
autokrator for
the king of Van-
dals Geiserich (428–477) and the recognition of his kingdom as the
independent state within borders of the former imperial provinces in
Africa by Byzantine Empire.
Keywords: Byzantine, Rome, Roman Empire, barbarians,
Carthage,
Vandals, Africa, Justinian, Belisarius, Procopius of Caesarea, Geis-
erich.
