Problems of learners with speaking activities

  • Glossophobia (75% of the population)
  • We have a fear of being laughed at.
  • Time pressure.
  • Lack of vocabulary.
  • Pronunciation.
  • Grammar mistakes

What can the teacher do?
The teacher must try to overcome these hurdles and encourage student interaction. The aim should be to create a comfortable atmosphere, where students are not afraid to speak or make mistakes, and enjoy communicating with the teacher and their fellow students.

Range
  • Has a good command of a broad range of language allowing him /her to select a formulation to express him/herself clearly in an appropriate style on a wide range of general, academic ,professional or leisure topics without having to restrict what s/he wants to say;
  • Uses basic sentence patterns with memorized phrase, groups of few words in order to communicate limited information in simple every day situations

ACCURACY

  • Speaking using correct forms of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Consistently maintains a high degree of
  • grammatical accuracy; errors are rare, difficult to spot and generally corrected when they occur.

FLUENCY

  • In second and foreign language teaching, it describes a level of proficiency in communication, which includes: the ability to produce written and/or spoken language with ease and without significant hesitation;
  • follow norms while speaking;

Fluency based activities

Activity 3 Keep talking

►Procedure:

☺(2 min) Tell participants that they are going to experience a fluency- oriented activity called ‘Keep Talking’. Tell them that they are going to work in pairs and each of them will need to speak for 1 min on the topic given by the trainer. Explain to participants that one person in each pair will be speaking and the other will be listening without interrupting the speaker. Model the activity with one of the participants.
