What is Speaking?

A Good Speaking Activity

-is communicative
-gives a reason for learners to speak
-is appropriate to the level and age of your students
-is flexible
-is adaptable
-is involving (all students participate)
-is interesting
-develops fluency
-allows students‘ own contributions
-allows students to choose the language (vocabulary and
grammar structure)
- it is important to use small groups or pairs during speaking activities so that all students can practise speaking
What Is "Teaching Speaking"?
While speaking , we expect our students to be able to :

• Produce the English speech sounds and sound patterns.
• Use word and sentence stress, intonation and the rhythm.
• Select appropriate words and sentences according to the audience, situation and subject matter.
• Organize their thoughts in a meaningful and logical sequence.
• Use language as a means of expressing values and judgments.
• Use the language quickly and confidently.

Speaking activities in the classroom

• Guided activities: accuracy based but a little more creative and productive. The output is still controlled by the teacher but the exact language isn't.
• Model dialogues.
• Guided role-play.
• Controlled activities - accuracy based activities. Language is controlled by the teacher.
• Drilling: choral and individual listening to and repetition of the teacher's mode of pronunciation.

Speaking activities in the classroom

• Creative communication: fluency based activities. The scenario is usually created by the teacher but the content of the language isn't.
• Free role-plays.
• Discussion.
• Debates.
• Simulations.
• Communication game.
