includes the production of cellular substances, i.e., the synthesis
of endogenous (the body’s own) substances (.e. g., proteins, carbohydrates,
fats) involved in the growth of the organism.
In general we call processes in which substances foreign to the body
are transformed into the body’s own substances assimilative energy-consuming
(anabolic) processes. In plants assimilation (photosynthesis) involves
capturing energy from sunlight, by which energy-poor inorganic
substances are transformed into energy-rich organic substances (autotrophic
