Unit Overview
Focus and Context
Outcomes Framework
In
this unit, students will further their understanding of fractions using
concrete, pictorial and symbolic representations to create and compare
equivalent fractions. While the goal
is to develop symbolic methods,
students work from personal strategies to more efficient ones. Fractions
with denominators of 10, 100 and 1 000 are connected to decimals.
Through thousandths grids and base ten materials,
students will express
a given pictorial or concrete representation as a fraction or a decimal.
They will also write a fraction from a given decimal and vice versa.
When working with fractions and decimals, students should understand
that decimals are simply another form of a fraction.
GCO
Develop number sense.
SCO 5N7
Demonstrate an understanding
of fractions by using concrete, pictorial and symbolic
representations to:
• create sets of equivalent fractions
• compare fractions with
like and unlike denominators
SCO 5N9
Relate decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals (to thousandths).
