4.2.2.2 Epistemology of positivism As a researcher in positivist paradigm is expected to be detached, neutral
observer, and value free, the researcher is expected to explain why social life
is the way it is by discovering regularities and causal laws (Weaver & Olson,
2006). Hence the researcher can study parts of reality and then add the

fragments together to form one whole objective reality. As a result, the
positive paradigm has mostly deductive reasoning in explaining the reality.
