Managing Time Effectively as a New Manager

Plan every day. Review your to-do list, and label your highest 
priority items. Tackle those first. 
•
Build in contingency time. If at all possible, don’t schedule meetings back-to-back. Try to keep 
at least 20 percent of your day unscheduled.
•
Do schedule in “think time”: time to do important, strategic thinking, etc. 
•
Remember that time spent with employees isn’t an interruption in your job; it 
IS
your job.

they don’t want, so avoid these common pitfalls.
Being Bossy
•
Listen more than you talk.
•
Always communicate in a respectful manner.
•
Don’t assume you always know best or have the answer. 
Micromanaging
You probably don’t like being micromanaged yourself; why 
would anyone else like it?
•
In general, share what you want your employees to 
accomplish and why, but allow them to decide how they 
will accomplish it.

Being Disengaged
The flip side of micromanaging is being inattentive and not providing necessary guidance.
•
Set clear expectations and follow up with employees.
Displaying Favoritism
•
Whether real or perceived, favoritism leads to a lack of respect.
•
Be friendly to all, but not “best friends” with anyone.
•
Don’t always socialize with the same employees. Invite everyone to social activities, or rotate 
whom you invite—if you take one person out for lunch one week, take someone else the next.
•
If you are supervising employees who used to be coworkers, meet with each individually and 
discuss how your relationship will need to change.
