Learning to Manage
: Tools and Techniques for the New Manager
As we just learned, it’s important to provide feedback in order to keep projects running smoothly 
and improve performance on subsequent ones. There’s no getting around the need to provide 
constructive feedback to employees, which can be uncomfortable for first-time supervisors.
While some people consider “constructive” a code word 
for “negative,” it’s more than a matter of semantics—
negative feedback implies simply telling someone what 
they’ve done wrong, while constructive feedback is aimed 
at improving performance, which should be the goal of 
feedback. When giving constructive feedback, always 
remain respectful and deliver it in a manner in which you 
would be open to receiving it yourself.

ttention. Discuss the issue with the employee soon after you notice it. Make sure you have the 
employee’s attention so they can retain what you tell them. Example: “Joan, I want to discuss the 
email you sent to the department yesterday. Do you have 10 minutes now or should we meet this 
afternoon?”

ehavior. Describe the behavior you observed. Use 
specific examples. Don’t use judgmental labels to describe 
the behavior. Example: “When you tell someone they did 
something wrong in an email and share it with others, this 
puts them on the defensive and erodes trust between you 
and that person.”
