Can the metric be cheated or dodged, and what 
can you do to guard against that?

Watch out for choosing measurements that have unintended consequences—that can cause 
other critical behaviors to be negatively affected. A classic example: Establishing a certain 
number of calls handled per hour in a call center may cause employees to dump calls in order 
to meet their quota, resulting in a decrease in satisfied customers.

Learning to delegate work effectively is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your 
employees. It helps you by allowing you to focus on your highest priority items, and it helps your 
employees grow in their skills and experience, making them even more valuable to the 
organization.
However, many people don’t delegate, or don’t delegate effectively. A study on time management 
by the Institute of Corporate Productivity found that 46 percent of the companies polled have a 
“somewhat high” or “high” level of concern about workers’ delegation skills.
