Simple Guidelines

Listen first. This may seem counterintuitive, but the more you listen, the better coach you will 
be.
o
Ask employees to share their successes as well as their concerns.
o
Find out what obstacles are making it difficult for them to achieve their goals, and then 
focus on how to overcome those obstacles.

Remember to offer praise more frequently than criticism. Many studies have found that 
employees improve their performance more when praised about what they do well than 
when you focus on what they did wrong.

Highlight one area for improvement. Tackle one thing 
at a time. Use the A.B.C.D. model described in the 
previous module.

Focus your coaching on these areas: 
o
Quality of work: 
Productivity, accuracy, initiative, etc.
o
Job knowledge: 
Current job skills, learning new skills, preparing for future opportunities.
o
Personal characteristics: 
Attendance, punctuality, courtesy, confidence, etc.
o
“Soft skills”: 
Communication skills, customer service, teamwork, etc. 

Follow up. At subsequent meetings, review your suggestions and see what progress has been 
made and what hurdles remain.
