We all have patterns and habits in our behavior. Conscious awareness will help ensure that your 
words and body language are congruent. Here are some typical incongruent patterns to look for.
Incongruent patterns in speaking:
•
The person is discussing something exciting but is crossing their arms.
•
The person is discussing something upsetting but is smiling.
•
The person is speaking in a confident tone of voice but is exhibiting closed body language.
Incongruent patterns in listening:
•
The person is listening but is not making eye contact.
•
The person is paying attention but is tapping their fingers on the desk.

As we learned from the Google research, employees want attention from their supervisors. 
Another seminal study that is still cited today looked at the difference between successful and 
effective managers.

Effective managers were defined as those who have satisfied, committed 
employees and high performing units while successful managers were defined as those who were 
promoted (they weren’t necessarily mutually exclusive). 
The biggest contribution to managers’ effectiveness came from 
communicating and human resource management activities: 
motivating, managing conflict, and developing employees’ skills, 
which took the form of asking for input, conveying appreciation, 
giving credit where it is due, listening, giving positive feedback, 
clarifying roles, coaching, etc. 
In other words, effective supervisors give employees their attention.
