Abstract 

Geography  acts  as  a  bridge  between  natural  sciences  and  social  sciences.  In  this  context, 

geographic approach is more or less visible in almost every field of science. One of the areas where 

geographical traces can be seen is art and literature. One way to define culture is to summarise it as 

the  common  behaviors  and  values  developed  by  societies  influenced  by  the  geographical 

environments they live in. One of the basic elements of culture is music. One of the genres of music 

is the folk songs in Traditional Turkish folk music. Folk songs are a reflection of folk culture which 

expresses traditional lifestyles. This music geography study aims to examine the notion of life in the

yayla  in  Trabzon  region  folk  songs  and  to  understand  the  interactions  between  local  people  and 

geographical views. For this purpose, 96 folk songs recorded in the TRT repertoire of Trabzon region 

were examined and it was found that 15,6 % of them (15 folk songs) were related to the life in the 

yayla.  This  is  one  of  the  findings  clearly  showing  that  transhumance  activities  have  a  significant 

impact on cultural life in the region. In this qualitative study, document analysis was used as the data 

collection method.
