GOLDEN EARRINGS
Done by Nigora Pirnafasova, G. Saparbaeva
People are of strange characters that are impossible to change no matter how
much they try. I also have an interesting habit. When I offend somebody (even If I
offend him fairly) I feel myself blue more than that person. This habit, probably,
passed me from my mother.
My mother has never scolded us even if she had ever upset anybody, after some
time she begged pardon herself. Only once she cursed me, it was so bad. I still don‘t
know who was guilty at that time.
It was early spring and the warm rays of the Sun became to heat a shoulder at those
days. I began to make a kite under an almond-tree. If the gum of apricot sticks to the
paper, it does not stick to the cane or it does not stick to the cane if it sticks to the
paper. I am trying to manage it sniffing my nose. My mother was washing laundry
next to me sitting on the bark. My father brought corduroy trousers to brothers as
―poor clothing for the poor‖. In fact, corduroy is very nice but it is bad if the clay
goes into inside of trousers when you topple, or when you play fury puck, or kick the
ball. My mother feels fainted as she washes these trousers on every three days.
(Probably my father didn‘t know that corduroy of that time would be a fashion all
over Europe over time. For my father, it was only poor clothing for the poor) In short,
my mother was washing trousers taking one and putting another, foams splashed
from the basin in every rubbing, the smell of soap was spread out everywhere. Aunt
Freckle was sitting on the turned down bucket opposite her there.
I don‘t like that Aunt Freckle, in particular, not her but her daughter. She always
said ―I will give my daughter Sai to you, you must marry her. If you don‘t marry her,
I will take her to your home with her knots myself. You bit her ear in your
childhood‖. I had better bite my dog‘s ear rather than bite her ears. Saida is bad girl,
even worse than boys. Toy‘s nose bled when she beat him while playing fury puck.
Aunt Freckle was grieving incessantly sitting on the turned bucked:
- I had been suffering so much from my tooth ache whole night that I couldn‘t find a
peace upon my soul -, she rubbed her freckled cheek.
- Did you rinsed off with boiled incensory –, recommended my mother while
washing the laundries.
- I did all-, moaned Aunt Freckle. I gargled with bitter stone. But it was useless.
They were a moment of default.
-Uff, I got hot, my mother wiped her foamy hand, putt off her tight dress with small
collar and threw it away.
- At last could we reach spring-, moaned Aunt Freckle – We want to arrange a
Khakim‘s wedding in autumn this year. Is it easy to arrange the wedding?! This or
74
that thing is not enough every time. I don‘t need to introduce OUR FATHER , you
know well.
Aunt Freckle complains much about her husband. Truely, Ismoil moustache drinks
much. He has not got regular job. If he drinks, he always makes bustle in his home.
Mostly Aunt Ffreckle takes Saida to our home playing on my nervous. She goes to
her home slightly after her husband sleeps at midnight.
- Khakimjon is still young-, said my mother thoughtfully. If you cannot arrange the
wedding this year, you can do it next year.
- But we are being hurried by the in-laws-, Aunt Freckle groaned again. – I may get
rid off these teeth after pulling out it. Yesterday I asked my husband if I could have a
denture made. Listen that was his answer, he said ―you can put your teeth by taking
some of golden pieces from your father‘s jug full of gold‖. I wonder, perhaps I should
give my only bracelet for it. Otherwise, I may look shameful with my toothless open
mouth.
… After finishing gluing my kite, just when I pulled the cane, suddenly it broke
up. Not only the cane was broken, but also the paper was torn off. I have taken it
from my elder brother by begging thousand times. It's over, it's all over. I was ready
to cry bitterly. As I kicked out the kite, it stuck to the ground.
-What had happened?–, asked Aunt Freckle-What is the matter, my son-in-law?
-Broken.
-Tell your brother, he will make another one for you.
Oh, yes, he does, does he?! He never does it. Hasn‘t he got another work apart
from me? He doesn‘t come from his school. I kicked the kite angrily again and I went
out. I came back only at sunset. There are the rows of shirts, trousers on a rope in the
yard. There is my old do‗ppi at the corner, worn out when it was mixed with mud
when we played the game ‗my bird‘s head‘. My mother was busy with her own
affairs under the almond-tree in half dark evening.
-Damn, I should milk the goat-, said my mother seeing me.- Come and hold it.
The goat is very calm but sometimes it is very stupid, it flutters until we milk her
and it feds up us. My brother or I have to hold its back legs at that time. But now it is
my turn to do that unpleasant work, so I have supposed to run away, but my mother is
angry with me.
-When will you be a person, little rogue! You are just nine-years-old, but you can
play only in the street. You are of no use for us!
-Not nine, just eight –, I screamed.
-Mute your voice!-, yelled my mother. After that I had to hold the goat‘s legs. The
goat is a goat! It has ‗a bad habit‘ when she likes my mother and her milking it. Then
my mother had to clean her dress for half an hour.
After finishing her work, Mum ordered:
75
-Take off those poor kids.
When I took of the ropes, two of them run to importunate to their mother‘s udder.
Mum put the milk into to the bowls and began to look for something under an
almond-tree.
-What are you looking for?- I said going closely.
Perhaps she felt sorry for reproving me a while ago, she tapped on my shoulder.
-Nothing. Go and eat your meal, I think you are hungry. Then she stood up and
exclaimed. – Oh, where does this Sun come?! Good evening!
I turned back to look and I saw my aunt next three or four steps to me. My mother
embraced my aunt apologizing for not saying the guest. My aunt is very gorgeous,
she has a black mole on her face, her eyes flashed. However, she is very masterful
woman. She utters every word by nailing. My mother is afraid of her. If my mother
doesn‘t respect her whenever she comes, she would show my mother‘s place.
-What are you looking for? – told my aunt in a thick voice,- you are wandering as the
beggar who lost his sack
-No, no sister-, my mother hesitated over and over again.
-One of my earrings is lost. A while age it was on my ear.
When I looked at my mother‘s ear, there was no earring on her right ear. My
mother used to wear her big golden earrings carefully, she always boasted that they
were memory from her mother-in-law.
-Ok, it will be found –, said she in a quiet voice,- if it is here, it has not gone
anywhere
-Hmm!-, my aunt shook her head such threatened that I saw her frowned eyebrows
even in the dark clearly. – You mean, if it leaves for, it has gone from rich, am I
right?! You have been living high of the hog. So you don‘t know the value of money,
sister-in-law?
My aunt gave me the knot in her hand and began to look around pushing the
ground with the tips of her galoshes.
- Let‘s stop it, sister–, my mother put her hand to her shoulder. – Let‘s go into home,
after a while your brother comes.
-That‘s how it goes–, said my aunt not raising her head from the ground. – The horse
finds, the donkey eats– Then drew herself up and stared at my mother‘s eyes. - Who
came to yours?
-Nobody. – My mother cannot speak a moment than added. – Sister Sharopat came at
noon. She….
-Sharopat? –my aunt curled her lips sarcastically that meant ―understandable.‖ –Well-
done, Amin, Aloha Akbar!
Aunt Freckle aunt, who was sitting on the turned down bucket, came to my mind
at that time.
76
- Stop, please, - begged my mother. – Don‘t say about her like this. What does she do
one of my earrings?
-She cooks and eats! – My aunt moved her arm angrily. – You know about her who
has sticky fingers. You should have been careful!
-No, no, no, -again Mum moaned. - What does she do one of my earrings?
-Again speaks, – my aunt raised her voice with threat. - Do you know how much does
it cost? – said my aunt showing the one of earrings on my mother‘s left ear with her
finger. –she hides all possible to steal to her bundle when she goes to weddings.
Mum stumbled not knowing what to say. I have heard about the strange trick of
Aunt Freckle when my parents talk. If the dishes and bowls are lost at weddings, they
are found from Aunt Freckle‘s home and she always said that she had taken them
absent-mindedly. At the moment, I have remembered that I looked at my mother and
my aunt turn by turn. I began to dislike Aunt Freckle.
-Your brother should not hear about it, - my mother begged. - It may be found.
- Where might it be found? - My aunt went into a house dignifiedly and my mother
followed her.
When I got up early in the morning, my mother was looking through carefully
under the almond-tree again. Apparently she did not sleep whole night, her eyes are
parched… I also helped her. But that earring was not found after a day or the day
after. My mother hid the other so that my father would not know.
… Perhaps, after two months left, if Aunt Freckle had not had a denture made, in
addition if my aunt had not come at that day, both the lost earring and the problem
would have already been forgotten. One of the hottest days of midsummer my aunt
came again. That day remained in my mind because she brought two bunches of
chillaki(midsummer ripening) grapes. There was vine even if they lived in a city. We
ate these bunches of grapes with my brothers joking. As you know if a guest visits
anybody‘s home in the village, neighbors also come. Aunt Freckle came first at that
evening. She greeted with my aunt sincerely and then she turned to Mum.
-Does it suit me? When she raised her upper lip a bit with her finger tip, two golden
teeth glittered. Her teeth suit to her blond face very much, and even her freckles are
hardly noticeable.
-It looks nice,- Mum said quietly. - Did you give your bracelet?
Aunt Freckle flushed for some reason.
-Oh, no, - said she folding up her sleeves. –Here is! My husband said. ‖Do not give it,
you will give it to your daughter-in-law as a gift.‖ She smiled waving her lips in order
to show her golden teeth.- Daddy has grown scrupulous and we are hastening
Hakimjon‘s wedding. God grants, we are going to organize a luxurious wedding
party in autumn.
-It is pure gold! -aunt said bitterly. –May you use it on your good day!
77
Aunt Freckle was very happy, my mother was worried about something, and my
aunt was irritating.
-It will be better if you have breakfast with us tomorrow morning,- offered Aunt
Freckle.
-No, I must go early tomorrow! - My aunt turned her face round.
But she did not leave in the morning. I was woken up by my aunt‘s loud voice.
- Unjust person, who does not care about other people‘s property! Even, you did not
think about your neighborhood! Even if you do other things besides making new
teeth, I recognize my mother‘s property.
- Eh, this kind of people does not have conscientious! - That was not my mother‘s
voice. When I looked over from my blanket I saw a fat woman who was otin or head
of our neighborhood women. One day in Inoy lame‘s house two teapots were lost,-
she grieved. - Except her nobody could do it. When I entered to her kitchen, they
were there. I recognized them from the lines on their spout edge. I asked why they
were there. She replied that they were accidently brought there. Damn you. How can
it be? Does the tea-pot have a legs to come to your house by mistaken?
- Look, she praises her husband again! He would be scrupulous! – When my aunt
pressed low table with her fist angrily, her fingers squeaked strangely. – He, drug
addicted mustache, may be scrupulous when he dies.
My mother brought tea.
-Let‘s stop this, -said she in a begging tone. - It does not matter whether she took or
not. Nobody caught her red handed? Well, I do not have any claim, I agree.
-You do not show off yourself like the rich, my sister-in- law!–, my aunt said
confidently.- Dress your son. Come yourself too, follow me!
Put the teapot at the table Mum looked at my aunt and otin aunt turn by turn
surprisingly.
-Where shall we go?
-To an open cemetery! -, spoke my aunt sarcastically as my mother was guilty for
everything. There is a soothsayer in our neighborhood. If she says ―suf‖, the water of
ditch flows to opposite direction. I will take you to her. Here otin also will be witness,
we will make return. Let she try to deny!
Mum stood staring at the ground. Apparently she was hesitating.
- Well, We are neighbors like the two eyes-, she said repeatedly over and over.
-
O-oh-, my aunt stood up. –See, how does she eat without any toil somebody‘s bread
coined in hardship? The only memory which left from my mother was lost suddenly
and do you care about your neighbor? I have not played my trumpet yet. I will not
stop unless I know the truth. – She turned to me and said calmly. – The soothsayer
tells fortunes with your son. The child tells the truth. Will you go?
Anyway I got up quickly.
78
-I will go! Go! –, said I in a loud voice.
Certainly, when we visit to my aunt‘s house, we get on trams! We eat grapes with
pleasure!
After drinking the tea, we were four together, my aunt, Mum, otin aunt and I set
off together. If we reach up to Besh-yoghoch, we will continue our way by train. It
is so pleasant!
Right, it is very pleasure, but it‘s a long way up to Besh-yogoch! As long as we
arrived in Dombraobod, my shoes began to screw my feet. I put them off and took
them in my hand. Walking on soil in summer mornings was so pleasant. Mild soil
darts through your toes like soft flour. You walk and walk but never feel tired.
When we went to Qoziobod after passing Laylaktepa, we drank water from natural
boiled spring. Then we came to Chilanzar. At the edge of the way there were prickle
brush woods with dusty leaves- wild oleasters (so that place was called Chilanzar). At
the other side of the way there were many varieties of pears- nashvati pear, tosh pear,
gulobi pear. The pears were still raw. But when you pass through under them, the
fallen leaves on the ground glue to your feet and make you irritated.
Passing over the bridge ―Siymonkoprik‖ is a real performance itself. In the depth
of poplar height the water flows in black. If you peep, your head feels dizzy.
My mother does not allow going to the edge of the bridge: they say water becons
and a person sinks himself... The rows of carts of horses and donkeys pass over from
the middle of the bridge. The other one waits, until one side of row passes over.
Sometimes carters swear, donkeys‘ roar, the camels with watered mouth, huge
amount of straws loaded like mountain pass there too. When you pass that bridge, the
squeaking sound of tram is heard and the other side is Besh-yogoch.
… I imagined the soothsayer mentioned by my aunt as a Gipsy woman like aunt
Acha. No, she was not so. After getting off the tram, we walked through such dark
subways with ripen apricot trees and walls on both sides of the street. Then we came
into a small damp yard where irises were planted.
Having seen the little dog lying in the shadow of the basement I suddenly stopped. It
looks like my mace dog, but it is white, not black. But for some reason it did not bark
at us.
We are all went up to a terrace. A polite woman wearing white shawl a dress with
wide sleeves greeted us with smile. I did not want to believe that she was a fortune-
teller.
-Bless you,- said she kissing my face. –Such a cute boy!
There was a net-cage hung on the pillar of the terrace, but the quail did not warble
in it but it often jumped and in every jump of it the grains were falling down to the
ground.
My aunt explained what had happened while I was watching the quail.
79
-Let‘s go-, said the old woman when she stood up. Then she tapped on my shoulder.
-You too, let‘s go, sweet boy!
We all came into such a half lit room which had raw-plastered walls and there were
set of trays and Arabic books on the low-shelves of it. Old woman left silently. My
aunt, Mum, Otin aunt, and I, all of us sat on the sin korpach in a row. Then the old
woman brought a big china bowl on her one hand and white cotton-cloth like a sheet
in her other hand.
You boy, sit in this way, -she said to me miming. She made me seated in the center of
the room. – Sit stretching out your legs. No, open your legs a bit.
When obeyed the old woman‘s order she put a cup of water between my legs.
I saw that the cup was full of water.
-Be seated and look at the water. - told she politely.- I‘ll say a prayer, you say whom
you see.
By saying these she covered me over with the sheet. In a moment it became dark
everywhere. The old woman began to say something strange. I became out of breathe
for a while. My heart sank in panic.
-Mu-um!-, I said moaning.
Someone tapped me on the shoulder.
-
Sit still. Your mother hasn‘t gone anywhere.
Having heard my aunts threatening voice my breath went back. I could glaze over.
However, I could see nothing but glittering water only in the cup.The old woman
was still saying something but I could see nothing except the water glittering in the
cup. A long time passed meanwhile. my shoulder and legs hurt as I was sitting
without movement. I hated my aunt and Aunt Freckle who caused me such a pain. If
Aunt Freckle hadn‘t stolen my mother‘s earing, I would be enjoying the game now. I
thought of it and sat over and over. Once I saw Aunt Freckle staring at me in the
water. She was just laughing. Even I exactly saw her two golden teeth which are
visible under her upper lip. I screamed in agony:
-Aunt Freckle! She is Aunt Freckle!
They took off the sheet quickly. I was sweating from fear or short of breath, I didn‘t
know the reason.
-Your expectations were true- Fortune-teller old woman said it looking at my aunt not
Mum.-Insha‘Allah, she returns what she stole, eshonoyi!*
- Was I right when I said that?! My aunt looked at us one by one proudly. – I shall go
and make her live the dog‘s life!
We stayed at my aunts at that night. Next day my aunt made Aunt Freckle live
dog‘s life as she had told before. Three women led me to a neighboring house. Aunt
Freckle was whipping cotton over the rug on the supa*.When she beat the whip-cane
on to the cotton it made sharp strong sound.
80
She saw the guests and got up quickly. She stretched her arms to greet us, my aunt
yelled at her
- I don‘t greet with filthy who has a denture made for someone else‘s money.
Aunt Freckle was taken aback with a whip-cane hanging in her hands.
-Do you know what you say, eshonoyi?-, she said it turned pale.
- That‘s what I mean, put the thing that you have stolen in its place! Aunt Freckle‘s
face turned worse pale.
-What did I steal?-, she said it in trembling voice.- Say. What did I steal?
- Eeee…!,- my aunt got angry and waved her hand. – Look, you had your teeth made
for my sister-in-law‘s earring, and now pretending as if you know nothing. - She
looked at aunt Otin. – Here is the witness! I had fortune-told with this innocent boy.
He said your name exactly and clearly.
- Woe is me! – Aunt Freckle‘s whip-cane fell of her hands. – What a slander! -she
said in a crying voice. Then she looked at my Mum
Aren‘t you ashamed of it, sister-in-law? Here, you see, what I am supposed to do.
If I have ever touched your single needle, let I don‘t reach my good intentions! -The
last words came out of his throat plosive cry. –May I sit on the tomb of my four
children, in case, if I have stolen it, okay!
Oh, no, damn it, sister-in-law! – Mum said it in trembling voice. - Take your
statement back! I agree with you, even if you have taken it!
Ye-e-e-e, again she speaks! Let you die before being rich! - My aunt turned back and
went further. When she went to gate, she looked back.
Well, you had better plead guilty, if you don‘t, you will suffer for it on doomsday!
Soon, my aunt and Otin aunt left the yard. Aunt Freckle was still crying bitterly, my
Mum was standing sadly in front of
supa
bowing her head.
Let the slanderer be slandered too! – Aunt Freckle said it crying.- Let she see no good
intention!
Please, stop, sister.- My mother was nearly crying too. - And let that single earring
damn forever. Please, don‘t be upset, my dear!
I‘m not satisfied if she is not slandered!- Aunt Freckle said it and went into the house
crying.
My mother stood in front of
supa
for a while and suddenly she shouted at me.
-Why you are standing stock-still. Go out of here, draft!
It was so bad. Since that Aunt Freckle and Mum turned away and broke up. But the
worst happened again after two months in one of the cool days.
On that day, when I came back from school, my Mum was sitting leaning over the
chest. Perhaps, she had taken some warm clothes from it, it smelled of mothballs
inside the house, thick cotton clothes, robes, fur-caps with torn off earmuffs were
scattered on the floor. My Mum‘s eyes were swollen from crying. Perhaps, she would
81
have been beaten by Dad, I was afraid of that. Then I came to her slowly. But she
even didn‘t turn. When I hold her hand, she took away her hands as if a snake has
stung.
Let the earth swallow the child as you! -, she said looking at me with her eyes
burning with anger. – You‘d better die than staying here on this day. Damn you!
My Mum had never scolded me like that. Perhaps for that reason I was ready to cry.
Why did you say so at that time.-She scolded me again. She said in a temper.
When? What did I say?
At the fortune teller, damn, fortune-teller! Mum screamed on top of her voice.- Why
did you say that you had seen Aunt Freckle?
What should I have done? I screamed badly. - I told what I had seen.
Here it is, may your eyes pass. Here it is! Mum threw something in her hand. The
golden earring was jingling on the floor.
It had clanged on to my net dress. Get rid of it! Take it off, away from my eyes! I‘d
better die than slander someone innocent. - Suddenly, she embraced me, she pressed
her face to mine and cried in default. - What shall we do now, my dear!
My face became wet with Mum‘s tears.
What shall we do, my dear! How can I get rid of this disgrace, my dear! - Mum sat
on the chest as fainted
Soon after that there was a wedding. Aunt Freckle did not invite Mum to the
wedding. But Mum baked a trough of ‗
