Elicit from the class some other examples of seemingly intractable problems, where both
sides have radically different positions. These examples could come from real life, the
news (business or, if you are careful, politics), etc. Trainees then work in pairs or groups of
three to role play negotiations to try to resolve the problems using principled negotiation.
Note that even if a solution proves impossible, they should at least try to identify the other
party’s interest, not just their position. Monitor carefully, and give and elicit feedback at
the end.
