Extension activity
You could turn this activity into a type of negotiation. Two teams independently come
up with their own definitions. They then hold a meeting together to merge their two
definitions into a single definition, where the class as a whole comes up with a single
definition. The aim is not simply to maximise the number of ‘my team’s words’ in the final
definition, but rather to find a solution that is acceptable to both sides.
Finally, tell them to compare their ideas with the Suggested definition on page 60 of the key.
You could go through each part of the definition to generate more discussion, using these
questions.
1
Can you think of an example of a negotiation with more than two parties?
2
What is the difference between a common interest and a shared purpose?
3
What does it mean if an agreement is mutually beneficial?
4
What does it mean if an agreement is mutually acceptable?
5
What does it mean if an agreement is mutually implementable?
