Strategies of Editing ‘Living Texts’: The Case of the 
Papadike
In this paper we intend to focus on facts and and on challenges encountered during the work on 
the critical edition of the elementary musical educational material (‚Protheoria’) of the Akolouthiai-
manuscripts (‚Papadikai’). After a brief introduction presenting manuscripts, numbers and orders 
of theoretical Papadike-elements, as well as a list of Methods and of Diagrams, some historical 
links between this propaedeutic material and the Sticherarion, the Akolouthiai-manuscripts and 
the Anastasimatarion are explored. Models of editing for some selected theoretical paragraphs, for 
the echemata and the parallage-diagrams (wheels, tree and other afferent exercises) are going to be 
presented, in order to discuss the larger issue of modern editions of theoretical material concerning 
Byzantine music through the centuries.
