Historiography of the problem

For a detailed description of English society in the mid-19th century, I used Charles Dickens 'novel" Great Expectations", which can be attributed to a documentary source.

Firstly, because Charles Dickens is a contemporary of the events described by himself. This also gives the writer's novels a historical value.
Secondly, Dickens ' novels can be attributed to documentary sources, given that he continued to tear off the masks of well-being and favorability with which the Victorian bourgeoisie covered the glaring social disasters of their homeland, during the decline of the revolutionary movement caused by the defeat of the revolutions of 1848, during the triumph of religious Victorian ideology, when the voices of many progressive writers were silenced.
All the literature I have used in writing this work has been systematized, i.e. divided by subject and degree of importance, as follows: in order to give a complete picture of the economic development and political situation in England in the middle of the XIX century, I have resorted to the help of literature of historical content, such as the textbook "New History 1640-1870" by E.E. Yurovskaya, M. A. Poltavskogo.
Then, in order to emphasize the merits of the writer's own method of work, his attitude to the bourgeoisie, and consequently the historical and documentary value of his novels, I resorted to bibliographic publications devoted to the fate and work of the great writer, such were the books: Potanin N. L. "Dickens Novels of the 1860s". - Moscow, 1968. The problem of the morality of the aesthetic ideal", as well as Ivasheva V. V. " Charles Dickens, about him. The work of Dickens", Moscow, 1954.
Further, in my work, I used literature of ethnographic content, primarily due to the fact that I wanted to study the life of English society of the XIX century, which was reflected in the encyclopedia "Essays on General Ethnography" in the volume "Foreign Europe" edited by S. P. Tolstov; to study the culture of the English dwelling, I was helped by the " Encyclopedia of Traditions and customs of Western Europe". - Moscow, 1998, and I also used the magazine "Britainic" - articles on ethnography No. 1-4, section 12, 1999.
