Abu Rayhan Beruni. One of the medieval encyclopedic scholars was Abu Rayhan Beruni (973-1048). He was born in the Khorezm city of Kyat. He was educated in Urgench. Together with other prominent scholars from the Palace, Abul Abbos Ma'mun II worked at the Ma'mun Academy. In connection with the capture of Khorezm in 1017 by Mahmud Ghaznevi, like many other scientists Beruni, was forced to move to Ghazna and lived there for the rest of his life. Beruni died in Ghazna in 1048.

There are more than 160 works on astronomy, geography, mathematics and history. Main Beruni's works: "Monuments of past generations", "India", "Mineralogy", "Geodesy", etc. In his works on astronomy in the middle ages, he was one of the first who put forward an idea about the rotation of the Earth around the Sun and its spherical shape, five centuries ahead of the outstanding discovery of Copernicus. He compiled a table containing the coordinates and magnitudes of 1029 stars, and a geographical map of the world — one of the earliest and most accurate in the history of world cartography.

Vast scientific and philosophical heritage of Beruni has made a great contribution to the Treasury of world science and culture. The city in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, The Institute of Oriental studies of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and the Tashkent state technical university are named after Beruni.
