Procedure of the lesson:
I. Organizing moment: Motivation, Greeting, checking attendance, season, weather, checking the preparation for the lesson.
II. Asking homework:
- Check for homework given on past lesson.
Ask pupils all new words learnt on previous lesson.
III. Pre-activity
Activity 1a Find the words in the Wordlist.
Objectives: to establish the meaning of the new words; to practise working with the Wordlist
PP find the words in the Wordlist. Do not forget to set a time limit.
1 comfortable
2 snack
3 choyhona
4 eating habits
5 fashionable
6 fast food
7 fries
8 cheap
9 expensive
IV. Main Part
Activity 1b Listen, read and repeat.
Objective: to teach PP how to say the new words correctly
This is an ordinary ‘Look and repeat’ activity. For the procedure see one of the previous lessons.
Activity 1c Point and say.
Objective: to reinforce the new vocabulary
In pairs PP take turns to point to a word from 1 a for their partner to say it.
Activity 1d Copy and tick the snacks.
Objective: to focus on the difference between snack and meal
PP look at the pictures and tick the things that refer to the snacks.
Answer key: a, c
Activity 2a Work in pairs. Write other words you know.
Objective: to think of adjectives used to describe places people go to when they eat out
In pairs PP read the given adjectives and add to the list. When they finish, write their words on the board. The suggestions may be: ‘small, popular, famous, comfortable, national, outside, inside'. The pupils do not know the last word, but as they know outside', they can easily guess the meaning of ‘inside’.
Culture Notes
In the west a cafe (choyhona) often has tables outside. Restaurants do not. Both women and men go to cafes alone and together.
Activity 2b Work in groups. Answer the questions.
Objective: to practise talking about places where people can eat out
PP work in groups. They look at the pictures and answer the questions.
1 Where are the people in the pictures?
2 What are the differences between these places?
3 You can eat in these places. What else can you do?
4 Which of these places are in Uzbekistan?
5 What do you know about Uzbek and English eating habits?
Activity 3a Read and choose the best title.
Objective: to read for gist
PP read the text silently and choose the best tittle.
Activity 3b Read and say True, False or Don’t know.
Objective: to check comprehension of the text
PP read the sentences aloud and say whether they are true or false. Ask them to correct the false ones. e.g. 1 Millions of Americans go to fast food restaurants.
Activity 3c Work in groups. Answer the questions.
Objective: to give pupils freer practice in talking about fast food
Make groups. While PP are discussing the questions, walk around, help with the vocabulary and correct mistakes. If time allows, ask groups to report.
IV. Post-Activity
Ordering in a restaurant – game
Vocabulary: Dishes (appetizers, soups, salads, main dishes), drinks, desserts…
Materials: Cards with pictures of food, drinks, and desserts. Prepare as many cards as you'd like this game to last. Students work in pairs, one is waiter, the other a guest in a restaurant. You can also prepare menus for ordering or download some from the Internet. Here are some nice examples.
How to play:
Give each student that plays a guest a picture-card or several with different dishes, so he/she knows which dishes to order from the waiter. It might be a good idea to write the words (names of dishes for example) on the board.
A: waiter B: guest
Dialogue:
A: Can I help you?
B: Yes. Can I have a hamburger, please?
A: Here you are.
B: Thank you.
A: Can I help you?
B: Yes. Can I have a glass of orange juice, please?
A. Sorry, I haven't got any orange juice.
B: I'll have a beer then.
A: Here you are.
You can add to this dialogue as much as you like, making it longer or more complicated.
A: Good evening.Can I help you?
B: Yes. Can I have the menu, please?
A: Here you are.
B: Thank you.
A: Are you ready to order?
B: Yes, I'd like a shrimp cocktail.
A: Right away, sir. Anything to drink?
B. A bottle of white wine and mineral water, please.
A: Here you are. Enjoy your meal.
B: Thank you.
A LIST OF PHRASES YOU CAN ADD:
If you want to spend more than one session on this topic, you can also pair your students and ask them to invent restaurant dialogues, memorise them, and then act them out in front of the class. You can also make it a homework assignment – they can make their own food cards, dialogue cards, menus or anything you can think of!! They usually like to make everything for themselves, but it will save you some time if you download worksheets that have already been prepared, or just browse through the real restaurant menus.
Good morning / afternoon.
I have a reservation for 8 o'clock.
Can I have your name?
Your table is ready, right this way.
Your table is not ready, would you like to wait in the bar?
Would you like an apperitive?
Anything for dessert?
Was everything all right?
Were you satisfied?
I'd like a brandy, please.
Could you bring me some bread?
Yes, I'd like a chocolate cake / ice cream / vanillla pudding…
No, thanks, just a glass of water, please.
Please bring me the bill.
Here's the bill.
Keep the change.
Everything was delicious, thank you.
Can I offer you dessert?
What's the today's speciality?
The fish is really fresh today.
Try our lobster risotto / seafood pasta / grilled vegetables…
If you try our roast pork, you won't be sorry.
Would you like to have a starter?
Our salads are excellent, madam.
Would you like to hear today's specials?
FOOD CARDS:
Find the photos you need for your dialogues on the Innternet. Extend your dialogue to a full meal ordering (first course, main dish, dessert, drinks), or concentrate on ordering just fish dishes, just vegetable dishes, just soups…
