TEXT 19. THE JUNGFRAU RAILWAY IN SWITZERLAND

The Jungfrau Railway in Switzerland is an extremely interesting example of penetrating into the mountain depth.


A popular holiday resort of Interlaken is beautifully situated among a picturesque group of mountains, with three peaks covered with snow and ice. The Jungfrau is the highest peak among them.
Because of steep rock this place could be reached only by experienced mountaineers until someone spoke in favour of a tourist rail route which would be very popular. A sur­face railway being out of the question, it was decided that a conventional railway should be built inside the moun­tains. At first it was possible to construct an ordinary surface railway. But in fact, where the mountains rose up in rock precipice the tunnel had to be built.
The scheme adopted for the tunnel is of great technical interest. First of all, the tunnel has a very deep grade. Actually it is so steep that the rack and pinion system had to be used to ensure a safe operation of electric trains in the tunnel.
The second feature of the tunnel is a great volume of earth-work involved in its construction. The first under­ground station is located at a height of 2,820 m. Here galleries were bored through the rock so that tourists could walk out on to the face of the mountain to see a beautiful view of snow peaks. Needless to say what a hard job it was to drill holes through hard granite. Removing spoil also presented a problem.
The Jungfrau tunnel is one of the few tunnels built with very sharp curves. After the first station the railway makes a sharp curve and continues its upward journey, still in the tunnel in the heart of the mountain. The next sta­tion is at a height of 3,130 m.
As to the terminal station it was initially decided that it would be in the Jungfrau itself at a height of 4,020 m. From the terminal a lift would take tourists to the actual peak, but it has never been built, and the end of the line remains where it was in 1912.
One should mention another interesting feature of the Jungfrau tunnel. At no point was it necessary to line it for the rock was extremely hard.
The construction of the Jungfrau involved 7.2 km of tunnelling.
