TEXT С. ATOMIC POWER FOR LOCOMOTIVE HAULAGE

(1) Nowadays it is Impossible to speak about the fur­ther development of transport without taking atomic ener­gy into account. In the near future, however, the, energy of the a,tpm—nuclear energy—will be, more probablyr used to generate electricity than to drive locomotives. But projects for atom-powered locomotives have been already worked out

(2) The proposed atomic locomotive is to be fitted with a small nuclear reactor which is necessary to convert¹-water into steam for driving a turbine. The turbine trans­forms the energy of steam into mechanical energy to drive a generator. The generator,,,, in. turn, feeds' power to the electric traction motors simiraf'to the motors install in,, the conventional diesel locos. (3) As nuclear fuel contains great thermal energy, the atomic locomotive will need only about 4 kg of fuel for a year's operation.
(4) Unfortunately for transport, nuclear reactors at present are too large and tpo heavy because of concrete walls needed, to protect.the crew from atomic radiation. Another
