Establishing the impact
Establishing the impact between human resource
management (HRM) practices – including per-
formance management – and firm performance is
problematic. This is because causality – determining
the link between independent and dependent vari-
ables (cause and effect) – is a major issue in research,
especially in the HRM field. Correlation does not
imply causation. It may be relatively easy to establish
correlations in the shape of a demonstration that X
is associated with Y; it is much more difficult and
sometimes impossible to prove that X causes Y.
