Technical competencies
Technical competencies define what people have to
know and be able to do (knowledge and skills) in
order to carry out and meet performance expect-
ations and are sometimes known as ‘hard skills’.
They are related to either generic roles (groups of
similar roles), or to individual roles (‘role-specific
competencies’). They are not usually part of a
behavioural-based competency framework, although
the two are linked when considering and assessing
role demands and requirements.
The terms ‘technical competencies’ and ‘com-
petences’ are closely related, although the latter
has a particular and more limited meaning when
applied to NVQs/SNVQs, as discussed below. Guide-
lines on defining technical competencies are provided
in Chapter 51.
