Behavioural competencies
Behavioural competencies define behavioural expect-
ations, ie the type of behaviour required to deliver
results under such headings as teamworking, com-
munication, leadership and decision-making and
are sometimes known as ‘soft skills’. Criterion-
referencing, ie comparing one measure or situation
with a criterion in the form of another measure or
outcome, may be used to determine the relationship
between them. They can be set out in a ‘competency
framework’, which contains definitions of the
behavioural competencies used for all employees in
an organization or for particular occupations such
as managers. Guidelines on defining behavioural
competencies are provided in Chapter 51.
