DESENSITISATION AND
POLARISATION
Impatience has a close relative that’s equally dramatically affecting our
ability to communicate: it’s desensitisation, which results from
sensationalism and the pursuit of intensity. Desensitisation powers
polarisation in society.
Sensationalism is the large, public version of the hyperbole we discussed
in our dissection of the Looking Good leech. For example, in the UK, it
seems that there are only 2 emotional states the popular media are
interested in: people are either fine or they are furious. Any time someone
is upset in any way, especially celebrities, the headline is: XYZ FURY AT…
When the media constantly dumb language down like this, exaggerating
emotions to make things seem more dramatic and collapsing a whole
range of emotions into one catch-all state, the effect is that we lose the
subtleties; shades of grey disappear and we end up with black and white.
You are probably already thinking that this kind of reporting combines
just about all the deadly sins in one, and you are right.
Sadly, though the temperature of news reporting and political debate has
gradually risen we, like the proverbial frog in the cooking pot, have not
noticed; we have become desensitised to the point where more accurate,
temperate language would seem weak and lame. We are becoming
addicted to intensity and numb to nicety and nuance. The creep is visible
across traditional media, where news is laced with opinion, broadcast
interviews are confrontational, interrupting kills dialectic and the game is
to be outraged and find the guilty party. Extreme news media outlets are
way more overt in peddling undiluted journalism of hate. We saw the
results of this in referenda and elections in 2015 and 2016: anger and
accusation displaced reason and compromise, with clearly divisive

consequences.
Of course, all of this requires the consent of all of us, because if we don’t
buy, watch or vote then the polarisers are marginal and powerless. But
the desire to be right is so strong that we are easily seduced to move down
a long and slippery slope. First comes caricature, which makes it easier to
dismiss those we disagree with. Next is condemnation, prejudice and
bigotry. Ultimately the slope leads to hatred or difference, which has no
place in democracy, which relies entirely on tolerance and civilised
disagreement.
We need more listening in politics, and we need it urgently. Politicians
meet often for ‘talks’. Wouldn’t it be a better world if they met for ‘listens’
instead?
Exercise: Engage
Think about your levels of tolerance for people whose views are not your own. If they
have been affected by the trend towards polarisation in the recent past, set yourself a
goal of reading things you are going to disagree with. We tend to surf the web to
validate our point of view. Do the opposite: seek challenge and see if there is
something to learn from those who disagree with you.
