Implementation of Software During the implementation phase I worked in the avionics team and wrote the software for the communications sub-system. The communications sub-system was written in C++ using Microsoft Visual Studio and was created as a Dynamically Linked Library (DLL). I developed the code within a wrapper provided as part of a simulation harness software development kit (SDK) which ensured that it was developed in a common way to all other modules produced for GR4. Initially, I developed the structures within which to store configuration data, internal variables and input/output data. I then developed the interfaces to the module and the configuration and runtime GUIs. Finally I put the appropriate functional content in each of the classes. This included producing the content for each of the displays in the sub-system, the prioritisation system for each of the cockpit sounds and the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) infrastructure for the sub-system to send data packets to an external communications infrastructure. My software was regularly reviewed by the work package lead and I provided weekly progress updates to the work package lead on number of requirements implemented, issues and risks, and hours booked to date. Once development was complete, I undertook unit testing of the communications sub-system which involved stimulating it with representative signals and ensuring that the system response was as expected. I created and documented unit tests to ensure that each of the detailed requirements was met. There were a few pieces of functionality that did not work quite as expected and therefore I had to do some bug fixing and retesting. Once I was satisfied that the communications sub-system was complete I released the software to the GR4 project as a whole and moved full time into my other role as Test Manager for the project.
