Note: the words ‘tabloid’ and ‘broadsheet’ originally referred to the size of the
newspaper: tabloids were smaller, and broadsheets larger. Now, however, the
word is often used to denote the ‘quality’ of the news, especially in the British
press: tabloids are more interested in gossip, sport and ‘celebrity news’, whereas
broadsheets give more analysis and coverage to international and national news.
However, some well-known broadsheets, such as
The Times
and the
Guardian,
are
now the same size as tabloids.
