The following dates of the several tenures of office of the undermentioned King's Bailiffs are taken partly from inferences drawn from the Rolls themselves and partly from other records, it is remarkable that the Patent Rolls as published contain so few references to them, they must have been appointed by letters patent.
William earl of derby held the office six years (see p. 207, Section V.) 18 John to 6 Hy. III., he was appointed by patent 18 John, m. 4. n. 46.
Brian de insula (7 to 12 Hy. III.) six years. The Pipe Roll records the grant to him of the 7 Hy. III. of the farm of the Peak and of Bolsover for ,£50.
robert de lexington (12 to 18 Hy. III.) five years. The Pipe Roll of 12 Hy. III. records his appointment. ralf fil nicolas, for one year (18 to 19 Hy. III.) john goband, for three years (19 to 21 Hy.
