Notes:
(i) New Spelling was jointly proposed by the Simplified Spelling Society of Great Britain and the Simpler
Spelling Society of the USA in 1956.
(ii) Regularized English was proposed by Axel Wijk in 1959.
(iii) Shavian was the brainchild of Bernard Shaw, who left instructions in his will that a regularised
alphabet of at least 40 letters, representing systematically the distinctive sounds of English, should be
produced. The winning design was by Kingsley Reed (Crystal 1988:81).
(iv) i.t.a.=Initial Teaching Alphabet was proposed by Pitman in 1960.
98 SHOULD ENGLISH BE SPELT AS SHE IS SPOKE?

Many people are sentimentally attached to the present orthography. They would resist drastic change that
made the written language they know and love look strange. Sampson points out that if New Spelling was
adopted it would result in the spelling of about 90 per cent of existing words being changed. This would
meet with strong resistance.
For all these reasons, the present orthography is unlikely to be drastically reformed. But this is not to say
that tinkering at the margins should not take place. In the past various changes have been made and I expect
that more could be profitably made without adverse side effects. For example words that came into English
from Latin or French had silent consonants introduced in their spelling by scribes who wanted to be clever
and reveal the etymology of words, but in fact were wrong about the etymology. Omitting such consonants
should simplify matters without causing problems. A typical example of what I have in mind is the word
island
which has an s in it because someone imagined that it came from the same root as the word isle
which originally had an s in it (because it is descended from French île which comes from Latin insula). In
fact, though isle and island are related in meaning, they do not have a common ancestry. Island never had
an s in it to begin with: its source was the Old English form iegland, where ieg is the earlier Old English
word for ‘island’.
A more general case where etymological considerations are relevant and which is ripe for reform is the
spelling of the verb-forming suffix -ise/-ize. There are two spellings of this suffix, found in a verb such as
civilize
/civilise. Both -ise/-ize spellings are pronounced /aIz/. In general Americans tend to prefer -ize and
the British -ise (so, I have used -ise spellings in this book because that is the norm in British English), but
life would be simpler if we all used -ize:
but a queer conservatism, mainly on the part of printers, supported by the OED, forces us back on an
etymological distinction which few of us are capable of making, offhand at any rate. The pundits say
that words derived from those containing the Greek suffix -izein should be spelt with the -ize ending;
the others -ise. But for ordinary people this rule conveys nothing at all.
(Scragg 1973:35)
