Why should I become a marketing manager?

The benefits of being a marketing manager are not just limited to salary. Marketing managers can enjoy a great deal of creative freedom in their work and are often sought out for their strong ideas and being tech-savvy. Career progression is usually on the table for marketing managers, with the option to specialise in a particular area of marketing, such as social media or data analytics, as you progress in your career. Becoming a marketing manager can be an excellent career choice for those who are business-minded with a strong creative streak.
“Marketing is the intersection of creativity and business,” says Jessica Mendoza, senior marketing manager and website director for Associated Press (AP), and expert marketing consultant. “I went into marketing management as I had previous marketing experience in high school, and then I went on to win critics choice awards for my work in publicity,” she says. “My mum was also in the marketing field and growing up I admired her for what she did, so I had an understanding of marketing from a young age. I’d suggest marketing [as a career choice] for anyone that wants to understand people better; if you’re looking to build a creative career that crosses with business, science, technology, and psychology, then marketing management is the perfect role.”
Marketing management is a great choice for those who have had previous marketing experience and feel ready to take the next step in their career.
“My previous roles were at marketing executive level with varying levels of responsibility,” explains Rebecca Hill, marketing manager for educational software experts How to Moodle. “I’ve always had lots of great ideas with a real drive to push things forward, so it was hard working with people who didn’t have the same level of ambition. So for me, marketing management is about being innovative all the time, keeping on top of trends and having responsibility for my own marketing function.”
The pathway to a marketing career isn’t restrictive. And, because marketing managers are found in nearly every business large enough to sustain them, there are plenty of options to work across sectors and with different types of products and services. Julia Munder, international marketing manager for luxury bag company, Maxwell Scott, succeeds at her role in the fashion industry because of her unique background. “I started my career as a TV journalist after my degree and masters in communication,” she explains. “I never wanted to work in fashion because my mum is in the fashion industry, but I saw a role advertised for Maxwell Scott in the UK, so I moved here from Germany. If you have an analytical mind and a creative character, marketing [management] is a perfect choice.”
