13.3.3. Univerzitet u Sarajevu Sarajevo school of science and technology Fully aware of the global significance of English as a medium of business, academia and communication, the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology has designed a degree in English and Applied Studies, which offers students a unique blend of linguistic and literary courses. One the one hand, the programme provides its students with a systematic survey of English grammar, allowing them to develop advanced English language proficiency. This programme is specific in that it addresses the particular language needs of non-native speakers, such as Bosnian speakers of English, trying to bring them up to near-native English proficiency. In addition, the focus it gives to translation and teaching allows students to choose the vocation that best suits them, whether it is a career in teaching English as a foreign language or working in translation and interpretation.
Combined with language study are courses in the literature programme, which give students an overview of tendencies in British and US literature from the earliest records to present day. These are supported by courses that reveal to the students the histories and cultures of the two largest English-speaking nations.
Because of the interdisciplinarity of this programme, students who receive this degree will be able to take up employment not only in English language teaching at all levels or translation and interpretation (or both), but also in journalism, professional writing, and cultural and literary analysis. Furthermore, this degree can be combined effectively with any other minor or major field of study that a student undertakes at SSST. Students who graduate with this degree will also to pursue postgraduate studies in these fields.
