This information can hint at an author’s purpose. Have students read the instructions at the
top of the page and the passage. When students have finished reading, direct them to complete
the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.
DAY
2
Remind students of the 
Author’s Purpose 
skill. Say: Not all fiction stories are written simply to 
entertain. Many authors write fiction stories to make readers think about life or their own 
actions in a new way. As you read, think about what the author is truly trying to tell you. Then 
remind students of the 
Ask Questions 
strategy (Week 6). Say: When reading fiction, good readers 
stay engaged by asking questions about what will happen next. Have students read the 
instructions and the passage. When students have finished, have them complete the skill and 
strategy practice activities. Review the answers together. 
DAY
3
Remind students of the 
Evaluate Evidence
skill. Say: When an author makes a claim, he or she 
should include evidence that supports that idea. It is up to you as a reader to determine 
whether an author’s claims are reasonable. Then remind students of the 
Determine Important 
Information 
strategy. Say: As you read, look for the evidence to support each of the author’s 
claims. This is important information that will help you decide whether the author’s claims 
make sense. Direct students to read the passage and complete the skill and strategy practice 
activities. Review the answers together.

skill. Say: You are going to read a passage about debt 
in ancient times. As you read, look for evidence the author uses to support the claims about
