Make Inferences
Students practice making inferences by using clues in a passage to 
understand what is being implied.
DAY
1
Remind students of the 
Compare and Contrast
skill. Say: Compare two or more things to find
out how they are alike or how they contrast each other. Then tell students they are going to read 
about animal laughter. Say: As you read, compare the different types of laughter sounds. This 
will help you organize the information in your mind. Remind students of the 
Make Connections
strategy (Week 2). Say: As you read, think about how various people from your own life sound 
when they laugh. This will help you make connections to the text. When students have finished 
reading the passage, direct them to complete the skill practice activity. Review the answers 
together. For the strategy practice activity, have students work with partners.
DAY
2
Remind students of the 
Compare and Contrast
skill. Then tell students they are going to read 
about filled pastas from different countries and cultures. Say: As you read, think about how
the pastas from difference places are alike or different. Remind students of the 
Organization
strategy (Week 4). Say: Authors organize the information in their writing to help readers 
understand and retain the information. Focus on how the author organized the information 
about filled pasta. Have students read the instructions at the top of the page and the passage. 
When students have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice 
activities. Review the answers together.

3
Remind students of the 
Make Inferences
skill. Say: Good authors give readers the opportunity
