The Hubble Space Telescope
Some of the most amazing deep-space photographs ever taken have come from the Hubble Space 
Telescope. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the European Space Agency 
(ESA) collaborated on the creation of this unique observatory in 1975. Today, the telescope orbits our 
planet every 97 minutes. Since it is well above Earth’s atmosphere, the telescope gets a uniquely clear 
view of the universe. The bus-size telescope is named after famed astronomer Edwin P. Hubble. During 
the early 1900s, Hubble’s work helped scientists understand that the universe is expanding. If he were 
alive today, he would no doubt be proud to share his name with this marvel of technology.
Although the Hubble telescope was first launched into space in 1990, it has been improved over time. 
Several servicing missions have been sent to the Hubble telescope to repair hardware and install 
technology upgrades. The Hubble telescope was designed so that astronauts could perform the 
necessary work from a space shuttle. Because of its adaptability, the telescope has been able to keep 
pace with technology.
One of the astonishing things about the Hubble telescope is that it is able to see early galaxies 
formed over 12 billion years ago. This is because its instruments can see ultraviolet and near-infrared light 
wavelengths that are billions of light-years away. The Hubble telescope is popular with astrophysicists 
because it has increased their understanding of the development of the universe. It is also popular with 
amateur stargazers because its images have been published around the world. With luck, the Hubble 
telescope will continue to inspire awe for years to come.
