Students examine and evaluate information that is depicted visually.
DAY
1
Review the 
Nonfiction Text Features
skill with students. Say: Authors can use text features in 
nonfiction writing to better organize and share information with readers. Point out the two 
lists in the passage. Say: This list has bullets, and this list has numbered steps. As you read, 
think about why the author created two different types of lists. Then remind students of the 
Determine Important Information
strategy (Week 5). Say: As you read, think about which 
information would be the most beneficial for different purposes. Then have students read the 
instructions at the top of the page and the passage. When students have finished, direct them to 
complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.

Remind students of the 
Nonfiction Text Features
skill. Say: You are going to read a table of 
contents. Think about which text features the author used to present the information. Then 
remind students of the 
Organization
strategy (Week 4). Say: Tables of contents are usually 
organized the same way. Pay attention to the organization as you read this one. When students 
have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review 
the answers together.

topics, they can include visuals to help readers better understand the information. These 
visuals can be illustrations, diagrams, photographs, or other types of visual aids. Study
